Morrison Library

113 Bear Creek Avenue

Built in 1946 by Mr. Carl Peinze, at no cost to the town.

In the early 1950s, the library was open on Tuesday afternoons and served the elementary school as well as town residents. In 1958, it joined the Jeffco Public Library system, an arrangement that worked for many years, until Jeffco was unable to weather a sudden increase in rent from the building’s new owners.

‘Doll house’ library closed in Morrison

The Morrison Branch Library has been closed, effective immediately. At their regular meeting January 18, the Jefferson County Public Library Board of Trustees voted unanimously to close the library. The little building, which has housed the library for 32 years, recently changed owners and the new owners have notified the library of a 400 percent rent increase. The board decided the rent increase made continuing operation of the branch economically unfeasible in light of the very small circulation of books and materials from the branch.

“We actually loan fewer books from that branch than from any other in the county,” said William A. Knott, library director. “We will institute a regular Bookmobile stop in Morrison as soon as possible. It is hoped that Morrison residents will have only a short period of interruption of service.”

Knott reported to the board that efforts were made to find a suitable alternate location for a Morrison branch library, but nothing was found. The Town of Morrison offered some space in the town’s office, but renovation of that space was prohibitively expensive, he said.

The “dollhouse library” which measures only 10 by 18 feet, was built in 1947 on land donated by, and with materials donated by, Morrison real estate man C. A. Peinze. The library became a part of the Jefferson County Public Library in 1958 and housed 3,000 books.
