“Dinosaur Quarry Site”

Hogback at Mt. Vernon Avenue
#69 on walking tour

The visible scar along the hogback was named a historic site, but for the wrong reason. This site originally documented for the National Historic Register is actually one of George Morrison’s early sandstone quarries and is labeled as such on one of Arthur Lakes’ drawings. The sandstone quarry overlooks the Cliff House, built of this red Morrison sandstone in 1873.

The historic dinosaur quarry site (Yale Quarry #10) is located further up the ridge; that quarry was reopened by the Morrison Natural History Museum in 2002.

Quarry #10 near Morrison, or Clay Saurian #1, as drawn by Rev. Arthur Lakes in about 1878.
