Dean’s Grocery Store

215 Bear Creek Avenue
#12 on Walking Tour

Built ca. 1890 by John Ross. A dance hall upstairs became the Episcopal Sunday School on Sundays. Later it was Peinze’s Grocery Store for many years. In the 1960-70s, it was the infamous Tabor Bar, before becoming Marlin’s Matchless (a restaurant) and, later, Tony Rigatoni’s Pizza and Pasta.

This market location was Starry’s after Peinze’s. Jack Starry was the butcher. Then Burrows & McIlhenny, then Graber’s Bakery, then Tabor Bar, according to long-time resident Robin Smith.

“Sandy and Avery Tabor ran the Tabor Bar next door to Schneider Drug before they moved to Peinze’s corner. It was the best restaurant in town when the Tabors owned it.” (Robin Smith)

In 2013, the front third of 2nd floor roof was removed and an outdoor dining/ drinking deck (called the Roof Top Tavern) added, opening Memorial Day 2013. Tony Rigatoni’s Restaurant remains on first floor.
